The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) released revenue data from the state’s three commercial casinos, with July showing a small drop in year-on-year casino Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR).

In July 2024, the three commercial casinos based in the Detroit area generated from casino games a total AGR of $106.3 million, 0.38 percent less than the $106.7 million posted in July 2023.

MGM Grand Detroit Continues its Domination

MGM Grand Detroit holds the biggest market share, generating 48 percent of Detroit’s total casino revenues in July, an increase of 1 percent year-on-year. According to data released by the MGCB, MGM Grand Detroit is the only casino to increase its AGR from July 2023.

CasinoJuly 2023July 2024Change
MGM Grand Detroit$50.0 million$51.3 million+2.5%
MotorCity$31.4 million$31.2 million-0.5%
Hollywood Casino at Greektown$25.3 million$23.8 million-6.1%

MotorCity Detroit Casino and Hotel’s revenue share remained steady in July at 29 percent, and its revenues only dropped slightly by 0.5 percent. Hollywood Casino at Greektown had the largest year-on-year drop, losing 1 percent of its market share and seeing its AGR decline by 6.1 percent.

Month-On-Month Increase in Revenues Powered by MGM Grand Detroit

The overall AGR from Detroit’s commercial casinos increased month-on-month by 1.7 percent. Most of this increase came from MGM Grand Detroit’s improved performance, with the casino posting a 5.18 percent increase in revenues from June to July.

CasinoJune 2024July 2024Change
MGM Grand Detroit$48.71 million$51.3 million+5.18%
MotorCity$31.47 million$31.2 million-0.86%
Hollywood Casino at Greektown$24.37 million$23.8 million-2.37%

MGM Grand Detroit’s increased revenues were enough to offset the losses from MotorCity and Hollywood Casino at Greektown. The former only slipped by 0.86 percent, whereas Hollywood Casino at Greektown AGR dropped a more significant 2.37 percent.

Negative Revenues for Retail Sports Betting

While AGR from slots and table games broadly remained the same year-on-year, retail sports betting took a significant hit. In July 2023, the three Detroit casinos collected $477,543 in AGR from sports betting. However, in July 2024, the casinos generated a loss of $399,229 from sports betting.

CasinoJuly 2023July 2024Change
MGM Grand Detroit$121,017$53,435-77.48%
MotorCity-$40,723-$647,136-176.32%
Hollywood Casino at Greektown$397,249$194,472-68.54%

The MGCB attributed most of this drop to one patron’s success at MotorCity. While MotorCity posted losses on sports betting revenues in 2023, those losses grew by over 176 percent in 2024.

The other two Detroit-based casinos also saw significant drops in sports betting earnings. MGM Grand Detroit sports AGR fell below six figures, dropping by over 77 percent. Meanwhile, Hollywood Casino in Greektown saw the smallest percentage change in sports betting revenues, but it still lost more than 68 percent.
