Given that Connecticut is one of seven states in the entire country, as of July 2024, that offers natives the chance to play at online casinos, they are obviously one of our favorites.
But, despite the wealth of online casino options, there are only two primary land-based casinos in Connecticut: Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort in Uncasville and Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket. The Nutmeg state really needs to step up their land-based casino destination offerings. But, that said, despite there only being two Connecticut casinos, they do look pretty awesome.
In fact, CTVisit.com, a website promoting Connecticut tourism, boasts that their two casino properties will take you ‘a world away’ and are ranked ‘among the top 10 casinos in the country’. We’ll let you be the judge of that.
Both casinos in Connecticut are tribe-owned. Legally, gambling became permitted on Native American land in 1986, and in 1992 (when Foxwoods opened), the federal government officially recognized the Mohegan Tribe. Just four years later, it cut the ribbon on its first casino and the Mohegan Sun Casino Resort began operations.
And even with just two casinos in the state, it’s still a booming industry, bringing in $579 million in gross gaming revenue as of 2023, according to Statista.
We got curious about where the luckiest spot to hit the casino floor in Connecticut might be, so we did some serious detective work and investigated both of the state’s casinos. Yes, you read that right—both of them. All two. Not too much investigating on our part then, so I guess lucky us? In our quest for the luckiest casino, we inevitably stumbled upon the unluckiest one, but who wants to know about that bummer?
Our research and analytics teams dove into review data from both casinos, hunting for luck-related keywords. We looked for reviews that mentioned "lucky," "won," "winning," "success," and other terms that scream "big wins!" Just a heads-up: this report is for entertainment purposes only. If we actually knew where the luckiest casinos were, you wouldn’t be reading this article right now.
In the ultimate grudge match, where two casinos collide and only one can come out as the luckiest casino in all of Connecticut, the winner is…
Foxwoods Resort Casino officially emerged as the luckiest casino in the Constitution State. It was a ding-dong battle, with just 00.13% between the two establishments. But alas, we have a winner.
With 3362 reviews in total, Foxwoods had 485 total mentions of luck-related keywords. There was a particular emphasis on the terms ‘won’, with 170 total results, and ‘winning’ with a further 85 results. Foxwoods also had significantly more references to the keyword ‘jackpot’ with 36 in total compared to Mohegan Sun’s 11, but that would be expected given they have more than double the amount of total reviews.
One visitor mentioned, “My husband won at the tables playing three card poker and I hit a bunch of jackpots.”
Another commented, “ I also rarely win but happened to win a great jackpot there. I was so excited”, whilst another reviewer added, “All and all it was good, girlfriend hit 2 jackpots the rooms are always great and clean, the beds are very comfy and it’s very quiet, I slept great.” Two jackpots! Good for your girlfriend.
Foxwoods has been open since 1992 and boasts itself to be the largest resort casino in North America. The resort itself is home to no less than SEVEN casinos as well as a hotel, gourmet restaurants, golf courses, spas, and state-of-the-art theatres, so there really is something for everyone here. Owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, dubbed ‘pioneers’ of the Indian Gaming Industry… by themselves.
Foxwoods is also home to one of the famous Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchens, so you can grab some fantastic grub and maybe even hear the man himself yelling at his staff, if that’s your thing.
Mohegan Sun are no slouches for luck themselves though, and it does feel a little bit harsh to call them the ‘unluckiest’ casino in Connecticut, even if the data does suggest that. We’re not going to say that, though. We’re taking the party line that Mohegan Sun is the second luckiest casino in the state, according to Tripadvisor reviews.
With frequent mentions of ‘luck’ (37), ‘winner’ (18) and ‘bonus’ (12), the data suggests if you come to this Connecticut resort, you have a decent chance of getting a rub of the green.
One visitor wrote, “I did really well on some of the slot machines—got some nice bonus rounds. Even though the place was mobbed, you could always find a machine.”
Another said, “My favorite machines to play here are ELVIS, Wheel of Fortune, Monopoly, Hot Roll, Jalapeño, U-Spin to win, and so much more. Never walked away broke. Won many jackpots, always come home a winner.” If there was somewhere I could go where I would always come home a winner, that would be my new day job! This is probably not the case, but the sentiment seems “lucky” all the same.
A smaller resort, Mohegan Sun still has two casinos at visitors disposal as well as a stellar family entertainment facility, spas, restaurants, and all the other amenities you would expect. It’s also home to a state-of-the-art poker room that holds up to 10,000 people, as well as concert halls, a three-story crystal fountain and a 55-foot indoor waterfall.
So there you have it, Connecticut’s casinos ranked in terms of luck. Having done the research, these are two stellar casino resorts that are much more than just casinos and are well worthy of a visit. If you plan a trip, we hope you get lucky.
