Indiana Casino Revenues Drop 1.2% Year-on-Year in September

The Indiana Gaming Commission has released a report revealing the revenue collected by each Indiana casino in September 2024. The report shows that casinos in the Hoosier State collected over $179 million in revenues, representing a slight 1.2% decline from over $181 million collected in September 2023. It was also a more significant drop of 10.2% month-on-month.

Majority of Casinos See Revenues Drop

Most casinos included in the Indiana Gaming Commission’s report posted decreases in year-on-year revenues, with six casinos seeing drops above 10%. The casino with the most dramatic change in revenues was Horseshoe Hammond, with year-on-year revenues dropping by more than 25%.

Other casinos that posted significant revenue drops include French Lick Resorts (18%), Rising Star Casino (17%), Ameristar Casino (15%), Belterra Casino (13%), and Blue Chip Casino (12%).

Even though the majority of casinos posted significant revenue drops, overall revenues for Indiana only slipped marginally. There are several reasons for this. One is the significant growth of the casino that contributes the most to casino revenue in IN, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana. The casino is responsible for almost 20% of the September 2024 revenues and saw more than 10% yearly growth.

Harrah’s Hoosier Park assisted Hard Rock’s contributions to the state’s revenues, the only other casino to see increases in year-on-year revenues in September 2024, growing by almost 3%.

Another reason for the overall marginal drop in revenues is the addition of the Terre Haute Casino, which was not included in the September 2023 numbers. The nearly $10 million in revenue this casino added to the revenues helped offset the losses.

If you look at the revenue numbers without Terre Haute Casino, the revenue drop from September 2023 to September 2024 would have been a more substantial 6.6% decrease.

Land-Based Revenue Drops May Convince Lawmakers Over Legalizing Online Casinos

Despite the addition of another casino, September’s decline in casino revenues may convince more lawmakers that the state needs to update its gaming offering by introducing online casino gambling. Indiana has considered online gaming several times, with two bills, HB 1337 and HB 1356, dying in committee in 2024.

September’s numbers may be an argument lawmakers use in the 2025 legislative session when another push to legalize online casinos is expected.
