Safer Gambling Week Highlights Increase in Use of Safer Gambling Tools

Safer Gambling Week (SGW), which ran from 13-19 November 2023, has revealed an increase in the number of British consumers using responsible gambling tools in land-based and online casinos. This is according to research carried out by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC).

It was the seventh time the annual event has taken place, organized by the BGC, the British Amusement Catering Trade Association (Bacta), and the Bingo Association.

Data Shows Increase in Use of Safer Gambling Tools

The data shows that the use of responsible gambling tools increased significantly during SGW. Data collected during the event included:

  • The number of deposit limits set increased by 18% year-on-year.
  • Players setting reality checks increased by more than 300%.
  • The use of maximum stake limits also jumped by 300%.
  • Deposit limits were set by 83,242 unique account holders (up 12.5% from Safer Gambling Week in the previous year).
  • 50 million impressions across X, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Messaging placed on major social media websites almost 30 million times (up 70%).

Annual Weeklong Event Has Gathered Impressive Support

The efforts of those involved in the week, which covers arcades, bingo clubs, casinos, and online gaming operators, have been praised by the BGC.

The event has also had the support of stakeholders and charities, as well as MPs and sporting clubs.

The continued efforts like those seen during Safer Gambling Week have been praised for providing a powerful advert for increasing the use of safer gambling tools in the industry. This is particularly important for players who enjoy playing real money slots and table games online.

CEO of BGC Praises Gambling Industry’s Efforts

Michael Dugher, the Chief Executive Officer at the Betting and Gaming Council, has said that his members promote safer gambling tools all year round.

He reiterated the importance of a week-long dedicated event, which brings together industry experts and a mass of support from MPs and the independent regulator, the Gambling Commission.

According to the CEO: “The industry has never been more committed to ensuring the many millions who enjoy a regular flutter continue to do so in a safe and responsible environment.”

Safer Gambling Week 2024 takes place from 18-24 November.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
