Roofer on Club Restoration Mission Through Bingo Tradition

We’ve reported on numerous bingo stories but nothing quite like this one, in which a roofer dressed as a clown aims to restore bingo in the heart of his community.

UK players opting for online bingo, along with online slots and other casino games, led to demise of some of the finest bingo halls. We’ve seen a decline in revenues and many closures, with the number of bingo clubs in Britain dropping from nearly 600 in 2015 to under 400 as of January 2014.

As of May 2023, there were around 260.

Will Weekly Bingo Restore Fortunes of Workingmen’s Clubs?

For one passionate roofer from Chesterfield, the mission is to revive two struggling working men's clubs by introducing a weekly bingo night. Malcolm Hancock, 49, is determined to bring back the fun and community spirit that were once the heart of his community.

Malcolm, who lives in North Wingfield, said that the last working men's club there shut down a couple of years ago.

"I want to bring a bit more life into these places. If things don't pick up, I don't know how long they've got left. We need to use them or lose them." said Malcom.

Malcolm has already launched his bingo night at Grassmoor club and is set to introduce it at North Wingfield Miners Welfare on August 2. The events will alternate between the two clubs each week.

Hopes of £1k Bingo Prizes

The nights will feature traditional bingo games as well as side games and entertainment, including music, jokes, and even a clown appearance by Malcolm himself.

The goal is to attract 100 players per night and eventually pay out £1,000 in prizes.

Malcolm insists it is going to be fun and that the response so far has been positive.

The next event is on July 26 at Grassmoor, and all are welcome to attend. Doors open at 7pm, with games starting at 8pm. Players can pay £15 for eight games of bingo and £1 to £5 for additional side games.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
