Pub Poker Player Wins Grovesnor Casino Goliath Tournament

The UK poker scene may not yield the same incredible prizes as those competitions in the USA and other parts of Europe but nonetheless, the prize pool of £1,879,840 cannot be sniffed at.

For those willing to fork out the modest £200 buy-in fee for the Grosvenor Poker Goliath, the gamble was to eliminate the rest of the 11,749-player field, including players attracted to the event in Coventry from many parts of the world.

This tournament has become one of the centre pieces in UK poker, and it is continuing to grow. Hosted at the Grosvenor Casino in Coventry, players did battle amid the bright lights and cameras, which beamed the live action across the world wide web.

Reigning supreme was amateur poker player Will Watkins from Milton Keynes. Will, who usually plays his hands in local pubs, took a chance on the competition, no doubt spurred on by his friends who consider him to be one of the best pub poker players.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
