WMG has a catalog of fun online slots under its belt, and many of them have now been redesigned with HTML5 technology, including the popular hit Fowl Play Gold. The original title inspired a series of popular spin-offs for the developer, including Fowl Play 4,096, Fowl Play Megaways, and Fowl Play London. It has now been remastered for mobile devices and modern online casinos, but can it still engage modern players? Let’s find out in this Fowl Play Gold slot review.
The original Fowl Play Gold slot was released by WMG all the way back in March 2014, and while it has been given a slight touch-up for the re-release, the company has stuck to the original design.
As such, there is no denying that the game looks very dated compared to modern free slots. The reels are set in the middle of a farmer’s field, with the symbols made up of farmyard animals. I found the game design to be quite nostalgic and charming, but it is hard to imagine it will satisfy players looking for something more modern or creative.
The original Fowl Play Gold was a hit for WMG, with the company able to build a series of games off the back of it. However, slot games have moved on a lot since its original release, and the HTML5 updated release fails to make any upgrades to the slot.
I found the gameplay for Fowl Play Gold to have a definite old-school charm. The slot uses five reels and three rows, with 10 active win lines on each spin. Whenever you place a bet in the game, you will be rewarded with two spins. All bets in the game are placed as stake per hand.
The initial spin will take place, and then some reels may hold in place. You are also given the option to hold other reels. I recommend leaving these decisions to the game, with time not really on your side, as the second spin has a timer attached. All wins are then calculated and then paid out following the second spin.
Holding reels is a very retro touch that I enjoyed. I also liked the fact that you did not have to pay extra to hold reels or for the second spin.
Unfortunately, bonus features are far from Fowl Play Gold’s selling point. As well as the aforementioned ability to hold the reels, the game has one other bonus feature.
This is simply titled The Bonus Game, and it triggers when players land three of the Chicken Bonus symbols. The bonus is a pick-me style round where players need to select from either three, four, or five chickens. The chicken will then lay either a Gold, Silver, or Diamond egg, which will reveal a prize.
As an older game, I was not surprised to find that there was no Bonus Buy feature available in the Fowl Play Gold slot.
When I tested the Fowl Play Gold slot for this review, I made sure to factor in that the game is a re-release and that the original title is over a decade old. The main purpose of the re-release was to update the HTML5 technology and make it available for mobile play, so it was important I tested it on a mobile device.
The mobile aspects of the game were solid, with the game’s design having no problem making the transition to the smaller screen. The gameplay itself feels very old-fashioned and would have perhaps benefitted from being updated for a more modern audience.
I recommend playing the Fowl Play Gold slot for free to adjust to some of the game’s more retro tendencies. You can do so using the demo we have provided in this Fowl Play Gold slot review.
You can adjust the stake by clicking the ‘Bet’ button under the grid. The minimum stake is $0.25, and the maximum is $4. This is a small range, and you have to bet at least $2 to have all lines active.
Fowl Play Gold does not boast a strong math model. The game’s maximum win is 2,500x your line stake, while the RTP is 93.3%. Both of these numbers are disappointing and are not likely to attract players looking for big wins. The game has been given a 4/6 volatility rating by WMG, which suggests medium-high volatility. This was largely reflected in my own experiences.
The original Fowl Play Gold was a hit for WMG, with the company able to build a series of games off the back of it. However, slot games have moved on a lot since its original release, and the HTML5 updated release fails to make any upgrades to the slot.
The game’s reel-holding feature is a nice touch, but the studio should have considered updating some of its features and gameplay mechanics if they wanted the slot to connect with a modern audience. If you are a fan of retro gaming and want a nostalgia hit, then Fowl Play Gold could satisfy you, but outside of this, there is little to grab your attention here.
If you want to test out other slots by WMG, I recommend trying Fowl Play Megaways. This offers a much more modern slice of action from the Fowl Play series. I would recommend Big Bad Wolf Pigs of Steel for players that want another slice of farming-action with more explosive bonuses and bigger wins.
