August 26 is International Dog Day around the globe and it's there's a day worth celebrating, it's definitely a day dedicated to a man's best friend. This is an occasion to celebrate all dog breeds whether they are family pets, guide and support dogs that care for people with disabilities, or those whose lives are dedicated to keeping us safe working in the police force helping catch criminals, detect drugs and bombs or find victims in perilous situations after natural disasters. This celebration was first introduced back in 2004 and has been celebrated annually since, with some 65.1 million homes in the US having a canine companion.
And with this in mind, the research and analytics teams here at akfxoqsd.shop decided we would take a break from testing casino bonuses to find out what the USA's favorite breed of dog is, alongside data to see what is each state's top 3 favorite breeds in order. For this research, we took 48 of the most popular dog breeds and analyzed their popularity from both a national and regional standpoint.
The top 5 most search dog breeds in order based on Google Trends data for the last 12 months were - Terrier (4181), Chow Chow (3980), Poodle (3892), Jack Russell (3801) and Rottweiler (3785).
In what was a surprise result given previous research, the Terrier emerged victorious as the nation's favorite dog breed. Bichon Frisé, Maltese, Labrador, Poodle, and Goldendoodle also performed well in the new 2024 study. Surprisingly, Golden Retrievers didn't perform as expected, being outranked by the likes of Samoyed, Chow Chow, and Rottweilers.
There were a few notably high performers, with Terriers coming out as the runaway favorites having featured as 5 states' favorite dog breed and having the combined highest search volume across the 12-month period. Terriers were on the list a total of 19 times when including the top 3 rankings for each area. The Labrador, which has previously been touted as the most popular dog breed in the US, only topped the rankings in three states but featured a further 5 times in second place.
States who love Terrier dogs the most - Arizona, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania
Some surprise performers included the Bichon Frisé which topped 4 states' rankings (Virginia, Wisconsin, Maryland, and Connecticut) and also featured a further 3 times in the top 3 for other states. The Maltese also got 3 votes, as did the Chow Chow and Rottweiler.
The Cane Corso didn't place as the favorite for any state, only featuring twice in total, as did the Siberian Husky. The Chihuahua didn't make it into the top 3 once, and neither did its size superior the Great Dane or the Border Collie.
Golden Retrievers can feel slightly hard done by having only been featured twice as a State's favorite dog (Colorado and Vermont). The French Bulldog, 2022's most registered dog in the US according to Statista, only made it to one top 3 list ranking second in California. Despite high search interest, Jack Russell's also failed to make the top spot for any state but made several others' top 3.
Methodology:
We used Google Trends to measure the level of interest in 48 of the nation's most popular dog breeds. Most crossbreeds were excluded, with this study instead referring to purebred canines. Some dog breeds, which had little search volume over the course of the study period, were also excluded.
In the case where a state had equal levels of interest for multiple dogs, search volumes for each item using Semrush were measured in that area to determine a favorite.
