Football made a welcome return for sportsbooks nationwide in September, and Connecticut was a prime example.
Sports betting in the Constitution State rose to over $130 million in September, the best month since – as might be guessed – the NCAA Basketball Tournament helped lead to a March total handle of $140.75 million.
For Connecticut online gaming, the news was also good last month, though that market is not as seasonal as sports betting so the increase was not as dramatic.
The August Connecticut revenue report was a slight bit of good news for state bookmakers as a four-month streak of declines in handle ended.
The sports betting handle (mobile and retail combined) that month was just over $80 million.
But September, with the return of NFL and college football, was on another level.
September’s handle (amount wagered) on sports was $130,547,719, up 63.1% from August. All but about $9 million of that came online, as mobile or laptop devices accounted for $121,586,037 in amount bet. That was up 66.5% from August ($73 million), the Connecticut State Department of Consumer Protection reported.
As for retail sports betting handle, that rose 27.7% from August.
September’s total taxable gaming revenue from sports betting was $12,926,483 (with $11,523,488 of that online) and that was a 54.1% increase compared to August’s $8.39 million. The state revenue share rose by the same percentage, up to $1,777,391 in September.
Connecticut is one of six states offering the best online casino options. That market, as well as sports betting, launched in October 2021.
As the first anniversary of Connecticut iGaming approaches, September’s online casino handle was $943,512,305. That was a 10.8% increase from $851.9 million in August.
Of that September total, roughly $588.4 million was wagered at the Mashantucket-Pequot Tribe, which has a deal with DraftKings Casino.
Mohegan Digital weighed in with $351.74 million in handle.
The taxable gaming revenue rose 7.1% last month, from August’s $17.73 million to almost $19 million. The state tax revenue increased by the same percentage, from $3.19 million the previous month to $3.42 million in September.
Online blackjack, roulette, and poker are legal and regulated in Connecticut, along with West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Pariplay entered Connecticut, its fifth state, by being approved for online gaming this month.
Pariplay, a subsidiary of NeoGames S.A., was granted an Online Gaming Service Provider and Gaming Services Registration Exemption by the state, and a license with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.
The other states where the company operates iGaming are New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia.
