Connecticut Sports Betting Sets Record in January as Casino Mixed

In the last month of 2022, CT online casinos set a state record for revenue.

For the first month of 2023, it was the state’s sportsbooks’ turn to set new marks.

January’s total sports betting handle was $167,673,044, breaking the record of just more than $165 million set in November 2022.

Combined with the action from online gambling sites, the Constitution State again exceeded $1 billion in bets.

Connecticut Sports Betting Analysis

The sportsbook handle, or amount wagered, in January was a 4.6% increase from December, when it was $160.27 million.

The online sports betting handle in January also set a record at $156,055,532, up 4.2% from December ($149.7 million) and more than $1.6 million ahead of the previous high-water mark of $154.45 million, also set with the Connecticut November sports betting report.

Retail sportsbooks took in $11,617,512 in bets, 10.2% more than December ($10.54 million).

The total taxable gaming revenue to begin the new year was $13,958,469 (with $12,793,947 of that online). That was 10.6% higher than December’s $12,625,502 figure. January’s state revenue share was up by the same percentage, rising from December’s $1.736 million to $1.92 million.

Online Casino Revenue Falls But Handle Up

The state broke the $1 billion barrier in online casino handle for the first time in the Connecticut December casino revenue report.

Connecticut could not match that pace in January but it was still a strong month.

January’s online casino handle was $924,595,284, down 7.8% from December’s record amount of $1.003 billion. Connecticut is one of six states offering legal, regulated iGaming at the best casino apps, joining Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware.

Those states plus Nevada have online poker as well.

Despite the decline in handle, Connecticut iGaming – which features online roulette, card games and mobile slots online – had a jump of more than 6% in both total taxable gaming revenue and state tax share.

January’s iGaming revenue of $24,182,292 was a boost of about $1.5 million from December’s $22.68 million. The state revenue share rose from $4.089 million to $4.353 million.
