Casinos can feel like some of the most luxurious places in the world. All those elegant people playing blackjack, waiters carrying trays laden with the finest food, and beautiful rooms to lay down your head after a hard day of gambling.
Some of the planet’s most luxurious casinos include the Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore and the Park Hyatt Mendoza Casino in Argentina, which are truly out of this world, but even Canada has some decent options.
While none of Canada’s casinos even live up to that luxury, there are a few places where you can look forward to a five-star experience. The hotel at Casino de Charlevoix is consistently rated as highly luxurious, while Caesars Windsor is known to provide affordable luxury, although it might not pull out all the stops every time.
We decided that there was only one foolproof way to determine which Canadian casino is the most luxurious. No, we didn’t visit each one and personally test the dining options and analyze how well housekeeping had done their jobs. We found a much more reliable way to rate casinos, based on Tripadvisor reviews. All we did was look for mentions of certain keywords like "luxurious," "comfortable,” and “impressive” and rank each casino based on how many times those words came up.
Instead of looking at every single casino in Canada, we picked a selection of the top ones:
We’re very pleased to announce that the most luxurious casino in Canada is Parq Vancouver. With 15.56% on our scale, there were six mentions of the word "comfortable," and five people even called it "luxurious." Featuring high-end salons, bars, restaurants, hotels, and gambling all under one roof, this casino can certainly be regarded as a destination.
“JW Marriott and The Douglas are the hotels. The JW is the more luxurious brand. I stayed on the 14th floor with a view of False Creek, Science World, Olympic Village, and the site of the old casino and high-end rooms. The ice machine contained bags of ice, the bed was excellent, super quiet, and the scents (shampoo, hand soap, etc.) smelled like a million dollars."
Sounds like a shining endorsement!
In second place, Grey Eagle Resort and Casino also impressed the reviewers, receiving 10.61% on our scale. 13 people actually used the word "comfortable,” and two said the experience was "impressive." Located in Calgary, this casino is one of the province’s top entertainment destinations.
There are more than 1,000 slots and 40 table games, and the luxurious hotel offers panoramic views of the beautiful location. According to one review, “The staff are amazing! One of the best stays I have experienced. Hotel is super clean. Beds are extremely comfortable and views of the mountains are breathtaking." What more could you ask for?
Coming in at a respectable third place was River Rock Casino Resort, located in Richmond, BC. Overlooking the Fraser River, dining, gaming, and relaxation all come together here. River Rock Casino got 10.17% on our scale, and a very complimentary review said, “Ours was a King suite on the casino side of the complex. We had simply booked a king room. Everything was perfect: our bed was very comfortable with beautiful linens; the en-suite bathroom was well appointed; there were two HD TVs—one in the bedroom, the other in the living room.”
Sadly, not every casino in Canada can be at the height of luxury.
The very worst on the list was actually Casino de Charlevoix, which scored a pretty dismal 0.97% on our scale. Only five out of 517 reviews mentioned any of our keywords, and absolutely no one called it “luxurious” or mentioned "luxury."
One review did confuse me a little though: “I guess if you are a gambler, you might like this place.”
If you’re a gambler, you might enjoy a casino. Isn’t that kind of the point?
Moving on, second from the bottom, Rideau Carleton Raceway & Casino got 2.02% on the Luxury Scale. Located in Ottawa, it promises unrivaled gaming and dining options, but unfortunately the reviews didn’t seem to agree with that. Said one reviewer, “Listen. This place is a huge disappointment. If you want to spend money, spend it on yourself.” That’s actually pretty insightful for a Tripadvisor review.
Third from the bottom of the list was Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall, and we can’t say we’re hugely surprised that a casino named after a lady with a diamond in her tooth can’t quite be regarded as luxurious. This one received 2.12% on our scale, with 12 people mentioning one of the keywords. Sadly, not one person used the word “luxury” or "comfort."
Said one wordy review, “Show was OK. 30 min. The hamburger was OK.”
